2023 Rosé de Grenache by the bottle

PRE-RELEASE The 2023 is perhaps my favorite in a string of very successful Mathis Rosé vintages.  The sparkling pale pink-salmon hue, coupled with opulent floral and melon aromas make it super inviting. Palate entry is fresh and silky smooth texturally.  Flavors include strawberries, white peaches and watermelon.  The brilliant harmony and balance of this vintage combine to make it a great warm weather refresher as well as an amazingly versatile food pairing wine.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Abundant rainfall blessed the 2023 growing season, reviving the highly stressed vines after three years of drought.  The grapes responded with near-perfect acid, color and ripeness, and allowed us to hold off picking until late September to gain complexity.

At the winery, the fruit went directly to the press without crushing, where the pale-colored juice from the grapes was extracted without maceration from the skins.  This traditional Rosé method, coupled with a cool ferment, allowed for low tannin and color extraction, coupled with exquisite fruit expression and delicate texture.

The 2023 Rosé de Grenache pairs exceptionally well with lighter summer fare, particularly grilled seafood, vegetables and chicken, as well as spicier, Asian-influenced dishes.  It’s showing beautifully on release and is ready to enhance your summer get togethers as soon as it arrives at your table!

VINEYARD DESCRIPTION

Peter Mathis with glass of Mathis Rose de GrenacheMathis Vineyard covers a 7.5 acre plot, situated in the hills above the town of Sonoma, on a warm, south-facing slope.  The soils are volcanic in origin, low vigor, with underlying rhyolitic rock.  The nearby San Francisco Bay, visible from the vineyard, provides a cooling influence and allows for extended hang time at harvest.
