2022 Sonoma Valley Grenache by the bottle
NEW RELEASE! From the Wine Enthusiast Buying Guide: The nose of this Grenache is an aromatic showstopper, with crushed cherry, raspberry and lemon peel aromas jumping from the glass. The palate offers sumptuous fruit character, velvety tannin and a bouncy acidity that lingers across the finish with echoes of flowers, herbs and citrus. Delicious now, this will evolve beautifully in the cellar. 94 points. —Tom R. Capo
WINEMAKING NOTES
With limited rainfall in the Winter season, 2022 was the third in a string of epic drought years. Water stress continued through the growing season, resulting in vivid fruit concentration and fresh acidity, characteristics also evident in the finished wine. We harvested a historically low yield for the Mathis Vineyard on the morning of September 2, 2022.
The Grenache cuvée included small amounts of the interplanted varieties: Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet and Carignane to add structure and complexity. The fruit was destemmed and left partly uncrushed for heightened fruit expression, then fermented in a 3.5-ton open-top tank. No yeast was added, resulting in a slow, natural fermentation of 15 days with 2 gentle, daily punch-downs. Pressed off skins at dryness, the wine was aged in 60-gallon, neutral French oak barrels for 21 months prior to bottling.
FOOD PAIRING
With its supple richness and balancing acidity, the 2022 Grenache is easy to pair with a wide range of foods. Best with mid-to-heavier dishes (think Roast Chicken, vegetable or meat-based stews and pastas and steaks), it also complements lighter fare. Consider serving it slightly chilled with grilled salmon—Delicious! The wine’s luxurious fruit qualities, silky tannins, and lingering complexity make it a superbly satisfying stand-alone glass of wine to enjoy with friends.

VINEYARD DESCRIPTION
Mathis Vineyard covers a 7.5 acre plot, situated in the hills above the town of Sonoma, on a warm, south-facing slope. The soils are volcanic in origin, low vigor, with underlying rhyolitic rock. The nearby San Francisco Bay, visible from the vineyard, provides a cooling influence and allows for extended hang time at harvest.
