2013 Sonoma Valley Barbera by the case

Barbera is a new wine for the Mathis brand, and comes from grapes grown by my friend and mentor, Joel Peterson, at his Bedrock vineyard in the heart of Sonoma Valley. Long ignored by mainstream wine consumers in the U.S., the Northern Italian grape of Barbera  is capable of making exquisitely beautiful wines, with bright acidity and deep fruit character. The great vineyard site and careful farming at Bedrock resulted in spectacular fruit concentration in 2013 and resulted in luxuriously framed wine.  Sadly, this vineyard has been removed from production, so this will be a one and done effort.  Get it before it sells out!  Peter

VINEYARD DESCRIPTION

Bedrock Vineyard, owned by Joel Peterson of Ravenswood fame, is located in the heart of Sonoma Valley. The area is sometimes referred to as the “Banana Belt” due to its underlying geothermic activity and lowered frost risks. Soils in the 2.5 acre Barbera block are alluvial Red Hills clay loam, transitioning to Huichica clay loam, and help keep the grape crop moderate to sparse resulting in great concentration.  Yield in 2013 was 1.8 tons/acre.

HARVEST

Small, open top fermenters (2 ton capacity). Only native yeasts are used (100%). Two punchdowns per day. Fermentations averaged 16 days in 2013.
