My raison d'etre! The signature wine from my Sonoma Valley vineyard is now in its 15th vintage, prime years for a mature estate, which is evident in the bottle: The Mathis Grenache is bursting with happy, red fruit flavors backed by the supple tannins from a well-established vineyard. You can get a feel that the Mathis Vineyard has come into its own in this wine. (I should know—I've farmed every row and block for the last two decades!)

My 2016 Sonoma Valley estate Grenache is an easy-to-love expression of the classic Mathis wine. It's joy in a bottle! The aromas of white pepper and strawberry jam are followed by intense Framboise liqueur flavors and an explosion of ripe red fruits. Structurally soft and approachable right out of the gate, the 2016 vintage has just the right amount of chalky tannins to ensure it’s a great food pairing wine.

Mathis Vineyard - Early Morning, Grenache, Sonoma Valley7.5 acres of heaven situated in the hills above the town of Sonoma, on a warm, south-facing slope. The soils are volcanic in origin, low vigor, with underlying rhyolitic rock. The nearby San Francisco Bay, visible from the vineyard, provides a cooling influence and allows for extended hang time at harvest.

Using native yeasts, grapes were co-fermented in a combination of 1.5 and 5 ton open top bins, with 2 to 3 pumpovers/punchdowns per day. Pressed at dryness after 12 days on skins.

A very early bud break led to an equally early bloom, with some shatter due to rains. The result was smaller clusters with quite small berries, all good for making concentrated wines. Summer was mild and moderate with no high heat spikes, allowing for extra hang time given the earliness of bud break.

Drinking perfectly at release, it should stay in its peak of fruit forward deliciousness through 2024 and beyond.
